REGIONAL CHAMPIONS

Maribeth Novak (2L) and Bradley Clark (3L) won the ABA Regional Mediation and Negotiation Competition by beating the University of Texas in the final round. Novak and Clark now advance to the national championship, where they will compete against the best schools in the country.

PHI DELTA PHI A reminder to all new Phi Delta Phi candidates that the rescheduled general meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 in Room 102 of the Law Classroom Building for all new members at 4:30 p.m.. Details of the initiation ceremony and following social will be discussed. Any new members who cannot attend, please contact one the officers listed on the Phi Delta Phi board or put a note in Mail Box 109 so that the information regarding the initiation ceremony will be passed on to you. The Initiation Ceremony for all new members will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2003. Further details to follow.

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SYMPOSIUM The Texas Law Journal on Civil Liberties & Civil Rights at the University of Texas Law School invites all St. Mary’s law students to attend the of the Capital Punishment Symposium to be held on March 19. There will be a celebration of the 10th year of existence as Texas’ only law journal devoted solely to civil liberties and civil rights issues. Below is the news release regarding the Symposium.

"The Death Penalty: Modern Developments" WHERE: Eidman Courtroom, Connally Center of the UT Law School WHEN: Wednesday, March 19, 2003 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. COSTS: Free Students & Faculty; $50 Practicing Attorneys for CLE Credit (Late Registration Fee of $10 applies after March 14, 2003). Free General Public ($6 for lunch). AUSTIN, Texas BB The Texas Journal on Civil Liberties & Civil Rights (TJCLCR) at The University of Texas School of Law, in association with the Individual Rights Section of the State Bar of Texas, is hosting its annual symposium on March 19, 2003. The Symposium is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with breakfast and lunch provided, and will offer 5.5 hours of CLE credit and 1 hour of ethics credit. Please contact the journal to register as seating is limited to 150. Please feel free to contact our journal staff with any questions or requests for additional information. The Service Pack is available at the link provided below and will only take a few minutes to download, even on a slow dial-up connection. If you are using the same computer and already took the Qualification Exam when you initially installed your software, it will not have to be retaken. If you registered using an e-mail other than your St Mary's email, please update this information as soon as possible. NEW STUDENT E-MAIL SERVER Starting February 16, 2003, you need to log into rattler.stmarytx.edu instead of eagles.stmarytx.edu/exchange. (Note: you do not have to put "/exchange" on the end of rattler.stmarytx.edu.) You retain your current login and password assignments. Your email accounts now have a capacity of 50 megabytes of email space. The previous setup only allowed 5 megabytes of space. This increase in space will allow more flexibility with files and miscellaneous attachments. It is the responsibility of the Law Students to maintain their email accounts. Accounts not in use for more than 90 days will be cleaned out automatically. In other words, if your account has not been viewed or modified within 90 days, your INBOX, OUTBOX and DELETED folders will be cleared out. Your accounts will remain with you throughout your Law School enrollment. Please check your law school e-mail account regularly.

OFFICE OF CAMPUS MINISTRY Mardi Gras : A Mardi Gras reception will be held on Tuesday March 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the Law Plaza. Campus ministry will co-sponsor this event with SBA. A dinner for two at the Plaza Club will be chanced off. All law faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. Ash Wednesday, March 5: A Mass will be held in the Law Alumni Room of the Law Library, at 12:00 noon. Father Terry Weik will preside. Sponsored by Law Campus Ministry Spring Break: Again, this year a trip is being planned to Las Vegas, New Mexico (one hour drive outside of Santa Fe) for Habitat for Humanity. If you would like to sign up or need more information, contact Law Campus Ministry at 431-6063. This event is co-sponsored by Dean Bill Piatt.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS The Christian Legal Society will be meeting on Tuesdays, at 11:30 a.m. in the Alumni Room of the Law Library. Lunch will be provided as always. Come and learn about your Spiritual Gift and how to use that to reach out to others for Christ. The St. Thomas More Society invites all students to attend our weekly meeting held on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Atrium of the Law Administration Building. -3-

WRITING COMPETITIONS, FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Unless otherwise noted, copies of detailed information regarding these writing competitions, fellowships and scholarships are available from Ms. Lucille Wideman, Room 105 of the Law Administration Building. The Howard C. Schwab Memorial Award Essay Contest: This contest is sponsored by the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association. First prize will be $1,500; second prize will be $1,000 and third prize will be $500. The deadline for submission of the essay is April 4.
