MILITARY LAW ASSOCIATION
The Military Law Association (MLA) will host their first general meeting of the year on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 in the Alumni Room of the Sarita Kenedy East Law Library from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be served. Anyone interested in joining the MLA are encouraged to attend the meeting.

WOMEN’S LAW ASSOCIATION UPCOMING EVENTS
Women’s Law Association (WLA) has two great opportunities coming up in the next couple of weeks. The first event is the annual Autumn Affair of the Bexar County Women's Bar Foundation (BCWB). The second is their joint Speed Networking program with the Office of Career Services and BCWB. Autumn Affair will be held Thursday, October 10, 2013. BCWB is looking for WLA members to volunteer for various shifts at either 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. (or whenever clean up is over). This is a great networking opportunity and it will count towards your public service hours. Please go to our TWEN page and sign the signup sheet to volunteer. Please be aware that spaces are limited so if you cannot make it after you sign up, let a WLA board member know and then remove yourself from the signup sheet to allow for another member to volunteer. The Speed Networking event will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2013 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Various attorneys from the BCWB will join us and they will discuss their areas of practice and their jobs. This event is open to member and non-members. To RSVP please visit Symplicity and sign up, as space is limited. WLA looks forward to seeing you at both events.

SPRING 2013 REGISTRATION
Below please find Spring 2013 registration information. The tentative summer schedule will be out prior to actual registration and will be distributed. Please check your 3

student email account. First year, first semester students will be registered automatically for Spring classes and are not yet eligible to register for intersession courses. Students may register on the below listed dates. Use the hours earned at the end of the spring/summer 2013 semesters to determine when you may register. October 14 through October 19 - students with 51 hours or more October 21 through October 26 - students with 31 hours - 50 hours October 28 through November 2 - all year groups All 3rd semester 1L evening students and higher can access online registration. Please check Gateway for information regarding any holds that may be placed on your online registration screen. If there is a hold, the office that placed the hold is the only authorized office to remove the hold. ARE YOU GRADUATING THIS ACADEMIC YEAR?
The 3L student mail boxes have been stuffed with an Application for Degree card, which lets the Administration know (1) if you will receive your JD or LLM degree [must check one]; (2) whether you intend to complete your degree requirements in December 2013, May 2014, or August 2014 [August graduates are considered with next years’ class, Class of 2013, for graduation purposes]; (3) if you will also receive a joint degree in conjunction with the Graduate School [indicate the Masters degree you will earn]; and (4) how you would like your name to appear on your diploma [next to (Print Name) line]. The completed card must be returned to Ms. Yvonne Olfers, Director of Student Records, LAB 121, by Friday, October 11, 2013. If you intend to graduate but did not receive a card in your student box, you can pick one up from her office. If you ARE NOT GRADUATING within the next 12 months, please let Ms. Olfers know so she can remove your name from any preliminary lists.

INFORMATION MEETING THE INSTITUTE ON CHINESE LAW & BUSINESS
Wednesday, October 9, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Atrium, Law Administration Building Lunch provided Contact: Professors Bob Hu or Vincent Johnson The law school’s study abroad program in China will be offered May 26 to June 28, 2014. All students are invited to attend an information meeting with the program directors, Professors Bob Hu and Vincent Johnson. Next year’s program will offer three courses (5 credits), conduct field trips to visit Chinese law and government institutions, and arrange for internships with Chinese law firms and American/Chinese companies. The courses will include the following: International Business Transactions and China (2 credit hours, Professor Vincent R. Johnson) explores the Convention on the International Sale of Goods and other laws relevant to business relationships between American and Chinese entities. Topics include import-export transactions, sales in China through distributors and franchisees, and direct foreign investment in China (joint ventures and wholly foreign owned enterprises). International Intellectual Property Law (2 credit hours, Professors Robert Hu and Sun Xinqiang) discusses the licensing and protection of intellectual property against the larger backdrop of international trade and commerce, with particular reference to intellectual property rules applicable in the United States and China. Introduction to Chinese Law (1 credit hour, Professor Chenglin Liu) introduces students to the history and institutions of the Chinese legal system, including the governmental structure, legislative process, court system, sources of law and enforcement mechanisms. It also explores the important substantive areas of the law, such as the rules governing property ownership.

LONE STAR CLASSIC – CALL FOR BAILIFFS & MARSHALS
The law school will be conducting the 2013 Lone Star Classic® on October 17–19, 2013 in San Antonio. The competition is open to all law schools that have been accredited by the American Bar Association. We anticipate having 16 teams compete. This year the problem will be a criminal case in the State of Lone Star, a hypothetical venue, and it will utilize the Federal Rules of Evidence. If you are interested in serving as a bailiff or marshal for the preliminary rounds, please stop by the Board of Advocates (BOA) office or contact Mr. Brandon Cook for an entry form. Notably, students serving in one of these capacities will receive 2 BOA points for each round in which they serve—enabling those seeking to join BOA in the future to meet the required participation points set out by the organization. 5

The preliminary rounds will take place on Thursday and Friday, October 17th and 18th, in the Bexar County Courthouse, Probate Court 2. The teams will break to semi-final rounds on the morning of Saturday, October 19th. The final round will take place on that same day, the afternoon of the 19th. Both the semi-final and final rounds will be held on campus, at St. Mary’s University School of Law. Additionally, the final round will take place in St. Mary’s state-ofthe-art courtroom. For those of you interested in advocacy, joining a mock trial team, or just want to see what these competitions are all about, this is an excellent opportunity to witness some of the best mock trial teams in the nation compete. CHARTING YOUR COURSE OVER YOUR LAST YEAR IN SCHOOL A Program for All 3L and 4LEs
The Office of Career Services has a video available to all 3L and 4LEs on the program “Charting Your Course Over Your Last Year In School.” This program will refresh your game plan as you start your last year of law school. Topics include: Refreshing your resume, using Symplicity, gaining additional job skills in your last year, preparing for solo practice, careers, learning about exit interviews, the bar exam and much more. This session will cover a brief overview of the laws and government agencies which regulate immigration in the United States. 8

Accordingly, the Law Library is offering this workshop to introduce you to some of the best free resources on the internet along with a number of other tips to save you money once you start practicing. This year the St. Mary’s Law School Pro Bono Program has many great opportunities for Pro Bono and Public Service activities. We are proud to announce the roll out of a new opportunity for all students: The State Bar of Texas Law Student Pro Bono College! This is 9

in addition to the St. Mary’s Pro Bono and Public Service Certificate and a great addition to your resume. St. Mary’s School of Law Pro Bono and Public Service Certificate Requirements 1. 50 hours of combined pro bono and/or community service hours completed over the 3-5 years of study, while enrolled as a law student (full time or part time). 2. Recorded on a tracking form that is approved or provided by The Pro Bono Program. And signed by a supervisor or authorized signer for the event(s). Requirements for Admission into the Pro Bono College: 1. Be a student enrolled in a Texas law school and be in good academic standing; 2. Complete at least 50 hours of pro bono work per year (September 1 – August 31); and 3. Complete an application documenting all hours performed. Pro Bono College Work Defined 1. The services must be law-related and be provided free of any charge to: a. A person who qualifies as indigent under the federal poverty income guidelines; b. Charitable, public interest organizations with respect to matters or projects designed predominantly to address the needs of poor persons; or c. The State Bar or any other body or organization in furtherance of the rights of indigent persons. 2. With the exception of travel time, any time spent working on the pro bono projects counts, including training sessions and research for the project. 3. Pro bono work does not qualify if it: a. Resulted in monetary compensation to the student above and beyond reimbursement for expenses incurred in the delivery of pro bono services; b. Was performed as part of a course or other activity for which the student received any academic credit; or c. Was performed in connection with fundraising activities. Benefits of Pro Bono College Membership Bronze Membership: (1st year of Membership) 1. Certificate signed by the State Bar President and Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court; 2. BIBLE STUDY ST. THOMAS MORE SOCIETY
Please join us at weekly bible study hosted by the St. Thomas More Society every Wednesday from 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. in Raba, LF 202A. We will have a brief lesson and discussion every week over the gospel. The discussion will be focused on how we can apply what we have learned to our future careers. Also, we will end our study with a short meeting to keep members informed about upcoming events. Snacks will be provided so come hungry. EXPOSITORY BIBLE CLASS
Those interested in learning the methodology and mechanics of the Bible are invited to attend Professor Jeffrey Addicott’s “Bible Class”. The classes are free and open to the public. Bible classes are held in the small conference room at the Center for Terrorism Law in the Raba building. Time: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. The classes cover individual books of the Bible using categorical, theological, and analytical teaching. Bring a pen and notebook! TOBACCO PRODUCTS
Smoking is prohibited in all law school buildings. Please refrain from the use of all tobacco products in the library and in the classrooms. Chewing tobacco, in particular, can stain furniture and carpets and the waste disposal process is distracting to others.

Each year, Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) awards a $1,000 scholarship to one minority student at each Texas law school. The symposium is the premier conference on Indian Law.
